Vail's Ice Bar Is Back for a Third Run, This Time at the Back Bowls Gate

  • November 5, 2026

In February 1964, outside the upper gondola terminal at Mid-Vail, a ski area barely two seasons old had a bar it had never approved. Bill Whiteford was one of Vail's first investors and helped build the gondola building and the Casino on Bridge Street. He had pitched the resort's board on a European-style ice bar that January and was turned down, so he built it anyway. It was a chest-high concrete ring about 30 feet across, covered in watered-down snow, with a full-service bar. The menu ran to pastrami sandwiches, corned beef, pea soup and milkshakes.

It ran on and off for about two months. Vail Daily's 2022 retelling draws on Dick Hauserman's book "The Inventors of Vail" and a 1972 Vail Trail caption. Those accounts say the bar was shut down for lacking a liquor license and the resort's blessing, then reopened. The final closure came from the Forest Service, which objected to Carpano vermouth umbrellas it read as advertising foreign liquor on federal land.

The idea came back once before, for Vail's 60th anniversary season in 2022-23. This winter the Vail Ice Bar returns for a third run, at a new spot next to the Legendary Back Bowls Gate. That location tells a local more than any of the season's other dining news. Each run of the bar has been planned closer to an existing kitchen, and this one sits at the junction where Buffalo's already runs one of the few lunch counters Vail lists for opening day.

Three Runs, Each One Closer to a Kitchen

The bar's history is mostly a story about location.

  1. 1964, Mid-Vail. Whiteford's concrete-and-snow ring stood on its own with no permit, no sanitation setup and no resort approval. That's why it lasted two months.
  2. 2022-23, Eagle's Nest and Wildwood. For Vail's 60th anniversary, the resort planned two bars made of ice and snow, one at Eagle's Nest at the top of the Eagle Bahn Gondola and one at Wildwood. A Vail Resorts spokesperson told Vail Daily the bars would be "co-located with existing food and beverage locations on the mountain" to avoid the problems Whiteford ran into. The grooming team planned to pile up snow and re-sculpt them after every storm.
  3. 2026-27, the Back Bowls Gate. The new bar is described in the Vail Resorts announcement as "a lively outdoor destination adjacent to the iconic Legendary Back Bowls Gate."

Vail's own page for Buffalo's calls it "the central connection point located at the Back Bowls gate," at the top of Mountaintop Express, Chair 4, Northwoods Express, Chair 11, and High Noon Express, Chair 5. So the third Ice Bar sits beside a working restaurant at the spot where three lifts meet.

The setting already has some history. Vail Daily reported that last February, DJ Chris Lorenzo played Vail's first sunrise concert under the Legendary Back Bowls sign. The same report describes the bar as "a beloved Vail tradition" that "returns," reimagined to blend "alpine nostalgia with a lively outdoor gathering space for drinks, music and après in the heart of Vail Mountain."

The Gate Is One of Three Places to Eat on Day One

Vail Mountain's target opening day is Friday, Nov. 13, which depends on weather and conditions as every opening date does. The resort's 2026/27 hours page gives Nov. 13 as the opening date for only three on-mountain dining venues. Every other venue is marked "Coming Soon."

Venue Location Opening date listed Daily hours
Mid Vail Top of Gondola One Nov. 13 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Eagle's Nest Marketplace Top of Eagle Bahn Gondola Nov. 13 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Buffalo's / Rocky's Road House Grill Top of Mountaintop Express Nov. 13 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
The 10th Top of Gondola One Coming Soon 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Bistro 14 Top of Eagle Bahn Gondola Coming Soon 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Express Lift Base of Gondola One Coming Soon 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Two Elk Top of Sourdough Express Coming Soon 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Wildwood Smokehouse Top of Wildwood Express Coming Soon 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Two of the three day-one venues sit at the tops of the gondolas, where you would expect them. The third is Buffalo's, at the gate. Its hours run from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., the longest window of the three, and Vail's page notes it serves "the only daily on-mountain breakfast," along with grilled cheese and soup. As the schedule stands, the corner of the mountain picked for the Ice Bar is one of the three places Vail plans to serve food from the first day.

The Ice Bar has its own timeline. The 2022 bars were planned in ice and snow, with groomers re-sculpting them after storms, and that year the resort said it hoped to have them open in December, depending on weather and snow.

A Gate Can Be Busy While the Bowls Stay Closed

The name suggests the bar depends on the Back Bowls being open. The last two seasons show how far apart those openings can fall.

In 2024-25, Sun Up and Sun Down Bowls opened Dec. 5, 2024, served by High Noon Express and Sun Down Express, Chair 17. Vail Resorts called it the earliest Back Bowls opening since 2018. The next season ran much later. Vail Daily reported that parts of Sun Up Bowl, China Bowl and Blue Sky Basin opened Feb. 5, 2026, and Chair 5 was still closed that day. By Feb. 23, 2026, Vail Daily reported portions of Sun Up and Sun Down open with Chairs 5 and 17 running.

From one season to the next, that's about a 10-week gap at High Noon, one of the three lifts that meet at the gate. Buffalo's sits at the top of Mountaintop Express and Northwoods Express as well. That's how it can be listed for opening day in a year when the bowls are still closed. A bar beside it is reached the same way. On a slow-snow December, the gate works as a meeting point with a view of terrain you can't ski yet.

The Rest of the New Lineup Comes In Around It

The other new and returning spots announced for Vail this winter are scattered across the mountain, and most carry a "Coming Soon" date on the resort's schedule.

The 10th, top of Gondola One. The Two Martini Lunch is served for two: martinis, an oversized Caesar salad and truffle fries. Vail Resorts first announced it as a new Vail dining option in December 2025, and this year's announcement calls it a return. Non-skiers reach The 10th with a scenic lift ticket.

Bistro 14. The resort's press kit describes a "retro après revamp with new booths, high-tops and a specialty Spritz menu."

Express Lift, base of Gondola One. This is the one spot on the list that needs no lift ticket, and it's a short walk from the Vail Village Parking Structure. Frisco-based Outer Range Brewing Co. sponsors the season-long après series. Live DJs play every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m., with more than 50 performing artists. Vail Daily put that at nearly double last season.

Two Elk Biergarten & Stein Club. This is a Bavarian-style setting in the back of Two Elk with beer on tap, bratwurst and pretzels. Stein Club members get a commemorative stein and discounts all season, first-come, first-served while supplies last. The Alpine Duet pairs two beers and two brats with a shared dessert.

Stoke Sessions, Vail Village. Live music plays every Friday for the first month of the ski season.

The everyday lunch line is changing too. Vail Resorts calls it the company's "largest investment in food to date." It covers the chili, burgers, pizza, fries, hot dogs, chicken strips and mac and cheese that make up most dining purchases across 15 resorts. The new Steakhouse Burger is a butcher's blend with New School American Cheese and Summit Sauce on a toasted brioche bun, served with waffle fries. Pecan-smoked bacon is an add-on. The company says prices won't rise beyond normal inflation, and Epic Pass holders still get 20% off dining.

All of this means a pass holder's November lunch options come down to Mid Vail, Eagle's Nest Marketplace and Buffalo's. The Ice Bar's spot was picked within sight of the one of those three that opens earliest each morning.

Our team at Team Black Bear has watched Vail's après spots come, go and come back over many seasons. We pay attention to how far a home sits from Gondola One, the Eagle Bahn or the village lifts that lead up to the gate. If you'd like to know how that kind of access figures into what your Vail home is worth this winter, ask us for a free home valuation and we'll walk through it with you.
